Hook
Have you ever wondered what it would feel like to find out your entire life is built on a lie, and the only people who know the truth are also the most dangerous you've ever come across? That's exactly the question that haunted me while reading WHAT THEY KEEP by Helly Clark. This novel pulled me in from the very first pages with its dark atmosphere, its morally grey characters and that constant tension that keeps you on the edge of your seat from beginning to end. I devoured this book in a few days, unable to put it down, unable to think about anything else. The tension between the characters is electric, the suspense is perfectly dosed, and you find yourself plunged into a world where every page brings its share of revelations and chills. If you're looking for a French dark romance that doesn't fake it, one that really shakes you up and leaves your heart pounding at three in the morning, you're in the right place. Get comfortable and let me tell you why this book deserves your next sleepless night.
What it's about
Meryl just graduated with a degree in art conservation and appraisal. She's a young woman who built herself up pretty much on her own. Her childhood wasn't kind to her, far from it. The only safe haven she ever knew was her grandmother's house. Isadora Dalmora, a strong and mysterious woman who took her in and raised her like her own daughter. Isadora was her anchor, her compass, her reference point in a world that hadn't given her many breaks.
But when Isadora dies, everything falls apart. At the funeral, three men show up in Meryl's life: Jarek, Evander and Cassian Dalmora. Three names she's never heard, three faces she's never seen, and yet they seem to know her better than she knows herself. Who are they? What was their connection to Isadora? And most importantly, why did her grandmother never tell her about them?
What starts as a disturbing encounter quickly turns into a plunge into a world Meryl didn't even know existed. A world of illegal trafficking, manipulation and violence, where the Dalmora name carries serious weight and where every decision can cost you your life. Meryl discovers that her grandmother wasn't simply the loving old woman she thought she knew. Isadora had secrets, dark connections, and a legacy that goes far beyond a house and a few memories.
Caught between her quest for the truth and the inexplicable pull she feels toward these three men, Meryl has to navigate a world where trust is a luxury and betrayal lurks around every corner. Alcohol flows, drugs circulate, and violence is never far away. This isn't a world where people pretend, and Helly Clark doesn't pretend either when she describes it. The tension builds steadily, between brutal action scenes and scorching intimate moments, all the way to a climax that leaves you breathless. At no point can you guess where the story is taking you, and that's exactly why this book works so well.
The characters
Meryl is the kind of heroine I love in dark romance. She's not some fragile little thing waiting to be rescued. She's a woman who learned to fight, to survive, to pick herself up after every blow. Her journey hardened her, but not to the point of making her numb. On the contrary, her vulnerability shows through in her moments of doubt, in the way she desperately tries to understand who she really is now that the only person who defined her is gone. Her expertise in art isn't just a background detail, it's a genuine character trait that gives her a particular sensitivity, a way of looking at the world that makes her unique among heroines of the genre.
On the other side, the three Dalmora men are each a world of their own. Jarek is the leader, the one who pulls the strings, charismatic and manipulative, the kind of man you know full well is dangerous but you just can't help being drawn to him. Evander is darker, quieter, a simmering threat that could explode at any moment. And Cassian plays the loyal soldier, whose devotion is as admirable as it is terrifying. Together, they form a trio that runs like a perfectly oiled machine, and the power dynamic between them and Meryl is fascinating to watch.
What makes their relationship so captivating is that the balance of power is never fixed. Meryl isn't simply subject to their will. She negotiates, she resists, she provokes. She uses her intelligence and her knowledge of art as weapons, and the three men don't always know how to react when faced with a woman who refuses to bend. And despite their dominant position, Jarek, Evander and Cassian are themselves trapped by what they feel for her. Each has his own way of wanting her, protecting her, possessing her, and those differences create tensions within the trio itself. It's a dangerous game of seduction where nobody comes out entirely unscathed, and where alliances form and break apart as the pages turn.
What we loved
The first strength of this novel is undeniably Helly Clark's writing. She has that rare talent for creating an atmosphere that gets under your skin. From the very first lines, you're plunged into this dark, almost suffocating world where danger lurks on every page. The descriptions are sharp without being heavy, the dialogue hits hard, and every scene is built with a narrative tension that never lets up. The Carl Gustav Jung quote that opens the novel sets the tone: "Aucun arbre ne peut atteindre le ciel si ses racines ne plongent pas jusqu'en enfer" (No tree can reach the sky unless its roots go all the way down to hell). That's exactly what this book is about. Meryl has to descend into the darkest depths of the Dalmora legacy if she hopes to make it out and find her own light.
Then there are the standout scenes, and trust me, this book is packed with them. The scene where Meryl discovers the truth about the Dalmoras during a grenade attack is an absolutely gripping turning point. In an instant, everything she thought she knew collapses, and the violence of the revelation matches the physical violence of the scene. It's raw, it's visceral, and it turns your stomach just as much as it fascinates you. There's also that scene where Meryl is forced to sleep with a man to sell a painting and uphold the honor of the Dalmora name. It's a terribly uncomfortable moment that perfectly shows just how ruthless this world is and how trapped Meryl truly is.
Finally, the handling of the polyamorous dynamic is remarkable. This isn't cute, consensual polyamory like you might find in some contemporary romances. Here, it's dark, possessive, twisted, and yet there are moments of unexpected tenderness that grab you by the throat. Those instants where the armor cracks, where a gentle gesture surfaces in the middle of the brutality, hit all the harder because they're so rare. When Meryl says "je suis leur jouet ce soir, je suis a eux et ils sont a moi" (I'm their toy tonight, I'm theirs and they're mine), it sums up this relationship perfectly: both toxic and addictive, dangerous and irresistible. There's something deeply human in the way these four characters seek each other out, hurt each other and always come back. Helly Clark doesn't try to make this relationship healthy or exemplary, and that's precisely what makes it so believable and so gripping.
The spice level
Let's talk about the important stuff. The spice in WHAT THEY KEEP is present, but it's not the heart of the novel. The intimate scenes are there to serve the tension between the characters, not to fill pages. When it happens, it's loaded with emotions, power dynamics and things left unsaid. The mood swings between raw domination and moments of pure vulnerability, which makes every intimate scene unique and meaningful. We're far from the gratuitous sex scenes you can find in some dark romances. Here, every physical connection moves the story forward and reveals something about the characters. The polyamory adds an extra layer of complexity, with three-way dynamics explored with real subtlety. The spice is lukewarm overall, it builds gradually but never becomes the main engine of the plot. If you're looking for a book where steamy scenes come every twenty pages, this probably isn't the one. But if you want scenes loaded with meaning and emotional intensity, you'll be well served.
The small downside
My only real reservation about this book is its ending. After hundreds of pages of tension built with impressive patience and skill, I felt the resolution comes too fast. As if Helly Clark had taken her time weaving her web and then, all of a sudden, had to wrap everything up on fast forward. Some revelations that deserved to be developed are rushed through in a few pages, and the resolution of certain story arcs lacks depth. It doesn't ruin the reading experience, far from it, but it leaves you wanting more. You close the book thinking you would have liked to stay a little longer in this world, to explore further the consequences of everything that just happened. It's frustrating, but it's also proof that the story hooked you enough to make you want even more.
Final verdict
WHAT THEY KEEP is a solid dark romance that checks a lot of boxes for fans of the genre. If you like combative heroines thrown into dangerous worlds, complex polyamorous dynamics and plots that blend romance and suspense, go for it with your eyes closed. It's the perfect book for a rainy weekend when you want to shut out the world and dive into a story that'll make you forget the time and skip dinner. I especially recommend it if you've already read and enjoyed mafia or criminal dark romances, because Helly Clark plays in the same league while bringing her own original touch with the art world and Meryl's atypical character. The blend between the criminal underworld and artistic heritage gives this story a unique flavor. Skip it though if you're sensitive to themes of violence, manipulation and coercion, because this book truly doesn't pull its punches. For everyone else, it's an intense, breathless and sometimes disturbing read that's absolutely worth your time.
If you liked this, you'll love
If WHAT THEY KEEP won you over, I strongly recommend diving into The Darkest Sins by J.D. Hollyfield. You'll find similar themes of dark romance with morally ambiguous characters, sexual tension that builds steadily and a criminal world just as immersive. In a similar vein, Their Sweet Obsession by Mila Crawford offers an equally addictive polyamorous dynamic, with possessive men and a heroine who flat-out refuses to let herself be dominated. The chemistry between the characters is explosive and the intimate scenes don't disappoint. And if you want to stay in the world of secrets and forbidden relationships, Their Dirty Secret, also by Mila Crawford, will appeal to you with its savory mix of manipulation, burning desire and unexpected twists. These three books share with WHAT THEY KEEP that rare ability to keep you turning pages at full speed without ever letting you catch your breath.
