💡 Si tu as aimé, tu vas adorer
Our full review
You know that moment when you open a book thinking it will be a nice little romance, and you end up devouring it in one night, heart clenched, cheeks burning, unable to put down your e-reader? Caught Up by Liz Tomforde is exactly that. A baseball player with a dark gaze, his baby boy who melts anyone who sees him, and a woman who walks into their life like a gentle storm. I was expecting a standard sports romance, and I got so much more. The tension between the two main characters kept me on the edge from the first chapter to the last, and the intimate scenes left me breathless. This book stayed with me because it manages to blend the raw tenderness of fatherhood with a desire that consumes everything in its path. Let me tell you why you absolutely need to read it.
📖 What it's about
We are thrown into the world of the Windy City Warriors, a professional baseball team where the stakes go far beyond the field. Kai is a player at the peak of his career, the kind of guy everyone admires from the stands. But behind the jersey and the spotlight, there is a man completely overwhelmed by his role as a single father. His son Max is still very young, and Kai keeps going through nannies who just do not work out. Between intense training sessions, constant road trips, and high-pressure games, he tries to handle everything on his own. And spoiler: it is not going very well.
That is where Miller comes in. She was not supposed to stay. She was not supposed to get attached. But there is something about this stubborn and clumsy father that holds her back. Miller becomes much more than just a presence in the lives of Kai and Max. She becomes the quiet pillar that this makeshift little family desperately needed. And of course, the lines between professional and personal start to blur dangerously.
The setting is established with a precision that I loved. Liz Tomforde does not just drop a love story against a stadium backdrop. She makes you smell the fresh-cut grass, feel the tension before a decisive game, hear the roaring crowd. Baseball is not just a prop here, it is the framework that amplifies every emotion. And in the middle of all that, there is this kid, Max, whose big innocent eyes constantly remind Kai and Miller that the stakes go beyond their mere attraction. There is a real emotional suspense building throughout the pages. We are not talking about a simple "will they end up together" situation, but rather "will they dare risk everything they have built to follow what they feel."
Monty, the field manager, brings a welcome touch of lightness to the whole thing. His bond with Max is endearing, and his presence creates an ecosystem around Kai that makes the story richer, more alive, more believable. He is the silent witness to everything playing out between Kai and Miller, and his occasional interventions lighten the tense moments without ever defusing them. You can tell that Liz Tomforde took the time to build a real world around her main characters, a world where every secondary character has a reason to exist.
👥 The characters
Kai is the kind of hero who wins you over without even trying. He is not the arrogant bad boy or the distant billionaire. He is a man who struggles, truly. His career as a professional baseball player forces constant sacrifices, and his son Max sometimes pays the price. This vulnerability makes him incredibly endearing. When he decides to fire yet another nanny because she does not meet what he wants for Max, you see a father who refuses to compromise on what matters most. He is gruff, protective, sometimes clumsy with his words, but every single gesture betrays an immense tenderness. And when his eyes land on Miller, you can physically feel the tension rising.
Miller, on the other hand, is a heroine who does not let anyone walk over her. She has her own life, her own ambitions, and she did not come here to save anyone. That is precisely what makes their dynamic so electric. She does not fall into the trap of the devoted woman who loses herself. She chooses to be there, fully, and that changes everything. Her relationship with Max might be the most beautiful thing in the book. The way this little guy clings to her, the way he takes his first steps toward his dad on the baseball field while she watches with tears in her eyes, that is the kind of scene that squeezes your heart without warning.
Their dynamic together is a game of glances, of barely-there touches, of unspoken words piling up until they become unbearable. There is a subtle age gap that adds an extra layer of tension, especially when Miller drops with a teasing smile that she has a thing for older men. The power balance between them shifts constantly, and it is this delicious instability that makes every chapter addictive.
❤ What we loved
Liz Tomforde's writing is devastatingly effective. She knows exactly when to slow the pace so you can savor a tender moment, and when to speed up to take your breath away. The crescendo of intensity between Kai and Miller is masterfully orchestrated. We go from charged looks to brushing touches, then to conversations where every word weighs a ton, before arriving at scenes that leave you completely wrecked. This is not artificially constructed tension. It flows naturally, as if these two simply could not stop themselves from getting closer despite everything that should hold them back.
There are many standout scenes, but the one that touched me the most is that baseball game where Kai sees Max in the stands for the first time while he is playing. You feel his heart tearing between the player he has to be and the father he wants to be. And then there is that incredible moment when Max, this tiny little guy, takes his first steps toward his dad right on the field. The stadium, the crowd, and this suspended instant where nothing else matters. I had to put down my e-reader for five minutes to collect myself. Liz Tomforde has that rare talent of transforming simple moments into unforgettable scenes.
And then there are the words. The dialogue in Caught Up is punchy, often funny, sometimes devastating. When Kai gets teased with that line, "Vous pensez que c'est drole, gamin ? Votre papa me rend gris" (You think that's funny, kid? Your daddy's making me go gray), we are right in the middle of this unlikely family atmosphere that makes the book so warm. But it is another line that haunted me long after I closed the book. Miller saying to Kai: "Tu as ete comme du poison cet ete, tu sais ca ? S'infiltrant dans mon systeme et me ruinant lentement." (You've been like poison this summer, you know that? Seeping into my system and slowly ruining me.) This comparison, this slow sweet poison, perfectly sums up their story. It is a romance that invades you gradually, and by the time you realize how invested you are, it is already too late to turn back.
The treatment of fatherhood is also a remarkable strength. Too often in romance novels, the child is just a narrative device quickly forgotten. Here, Max is a character in his own right. His presence shapes Kai's decisions, hesitations, and sacrifices. Every romantic choice is doubled with a parental one, and this complexity gives a depth that you do not find in every romance of this genre.
🔥 The spice level
Let us talk about what really interests you, let us be honest. Caught Up brings the heat, and it brings it well. We are looking at a four out of five on the spice scale, and every intimate scene lives up to the tension that has been building. Liz Tomforde does not rush. She takes the time to build desire until it becomes almost unbearable, then she gives you exactly what you were waiting for, and sometimes a little more.
The hotel scene between Miller and Kai is a turning point in the book. It is raw, it is intense, it is loaded with all the emotion contained over entire chapters. You can feel that these two have been holding back for so long that when the walls finally come down, it is with an almost desperate urgency. This is not gratuitous spice. Every intimate moment moves their relationship forward, reveals a vulnerability, deepens their connection. The physical desire is inseparable from the emotional attachment, and that is what makes these scenes truly scorching rather than simply explicit.
The mood swings between devouring passion and an unexpected tenderness that melts you. We go from consuming to delicate within the same chapter, and it is this back-and-forth that makes the spice in this book particularly well done.
⚠ The small downside
If I have to be completely honest, and that is what you expect from me, the ending left me a little wanting. Not because it is bad, far from it. But because after all that masterfully constructed tension, the resolution follows a pattern we have already seen in quite a few romances of this genre. You can tell that Liz Tomforde played it safe for the resolution, and I would have loved for her to surprise us in the final chapters as much as she did in the middle of the book. The predictability of the last act contrasts a bit with the originality of the rest. It is still a beautiful ending, reassuring and satisfying, but for a book that had gotten me used to better, I wanted even more.
⭐ Final verdict
Caught Up is a romance that fully deserves a spot on your to-be-read pile. If you love stories where a man who seems tough on the outside completely melts for a woman who is not even trying to seduce him, if you fall for single dads who carry their baby in one arm and throw balls at a hundred and fifty kilometers per hour with the other, and if you want a slow temperature rise that keeps you glued to your e-reader until three in the morning, go for it. It is the perfect book for a rainy weekend under the covers, or for those long summer evenings when you are looking for a read that makes you feel something. Despite its small downside with the ending, the quality of the writing, the depth of the characters, and the intensity of the spice make it a well-deserved four out of five.
💡 If you liked this, you'll love
If you enjoyed Caught Up, I recommend you dive right into Playing for Keeps by R.S. Grey, which also blends romance and sports with a delicious tension and lovable characters. In a similar vein, The Player and the Playboy by Natalie Gayle will give you that same sporty romance vibe where the stakes go beyond the field. And if it is the single father trope that won you over, go straight to Wait for It by Mariana Zapata, a masterful slow burn where a gruff man and his nephew end up melting the most patient heroine in the world. These three books share with Caught Up that ability to make the everyday extraordinary and to turn simple situations into unforgettable love stories.

No estaba destinada a quedarse. No estaba destinada a comprometerse.
Caught Up calienta, y lo hace bien.
Si te gustó Caught Up, te recomiendo que pruebes Playing for Keeps de R.S.
Hier kommt Miller ins Spiel.
❤ Was uns begeistert hat
Caught Up di Liz Tomforde è esattamente così.
Qui entra in scena Miller.
👥 I personaggi
I dialoghi in Caught Up sono incisivi, spesso divertenti, a volte devastanti.
