Quand Hallie lui dit "I'm flattered, but I've been out of the dating game for quite a while and frankly, I'd rather catch up on sleep", on sent toute l'ambivalence, ce melange de défense et de désir qui la tiraille.
⭐ Verdict final
Note finale : 4 sur 5 sans hesitation.
💡 Si tu as aimé, tu vas adorer
Our full review
You know what drives me absolutely crazy about second-chance romances? That exact moment when two people who know each other inside out, who shared years of memories, laughter, and first butterflies, find themselves face to face and pretend none of it ever happened. That unbearable tension between what they want and what they allow themselves to feel. That is exactly what Liz Tomforde captured in Rewind It Back, and trust me, she did it with a kind of talent that had me glued to my couch for two solid days. After Mile High and Caught Up, I thought I knew what to expect from her writing. I was wrong. This book caught me off guard, made me laugh, made me sigh, and reminded me why I fell in love with sports romance in the first place. If you are looking for your next bookish obsession, get comfortable, because we are going to talk about it.
📖 What it's about
Hallie Hart is in her senior year of high school and she has a secret. A secret with a first name, who lives next door, and who has the most beautiful eyes she has ever seen. Rio DeLuca is her childhood friend, her lifelong neighbor, the one she grew up with between backyard football games and movie nights under a blanket. Except now Rio is in college, and what existed between them for years has finally turned into something far more intense. The problem? Nobody knows. Their relationship is a carefully kept secret, and the distance between high school and university does not make things any easier.
When Hallie moves into a new house designed by Wren, her roommate who is as talented as she is lovable, her life takes an unexpected turn. New surroundings, new people, and most importantly a certain Tyler Braden, a wealthy client of Wren's, whose presence adds another layer of tension to a daily life already overflowing with emotions. Hallie finds herself juggling her feelings for Rio, the temptation of a fresh start, and the expectations of everyone around her.
What makes this story so gripping is that Liz Tomforde does not settle for telling a romance. She explores the challenges of distance, of growing up, of those choices you make at eighteen that feel impossible even though they are actually simple. Should you listen to your heart or follow the sensible path? Hallie and Rio are caught in that in-between, and every chapter pushes the reader to hope they will finally find the courage to choose each other for good.
The sports world is there in the background, bringing everything it carries in terms of pace, camaraderie, and stakes. Tomforde knows exactly how to balance the locker room scenes, the game-day moments, and the vulnerable instants off the field. The setting is not just a convenient backdrop, it is an integral part of who the characters are and what drives them. You can tell the author did her homework, that the world of American college sports is not just an aesthetic choice but a genuine narrative engine that shapes every character's decisions. The pressure of results, the eyes of teammates, the sacrifices a sports career demands, all of it feeds the tension between Hallie and Rio and gives their story an added weight.
👥 The characters
Hallie Hart is the kind of heroine you love instantly. She is funny, a little clumsy, deeply loyal, and hopelessly endearing. What makes her feel real is that she doubts. She doubts her choices, her place in Rio's life, what she truly wants for her future. She is not a flawless heroine with all the answers, she is a young woman in the process of figuring herself out, trying to navigate between her desires and reality. Her inner voice is a delight to read, full of sarcasm and vulnerability blended together, and you find yourself talking to her like a friend as you turn the pages.
Rio DeLuca, on his end, is the quintessential book boyfriend without ever falling into caricature. He is caring, protective without being suffocating, and above all deeply human. You can feel the weight of the distance on his shoulders, the frustration of not being able to live their love out in the open, and that quiet determination to make things work no matter what. When he tells Hallie "I want us to move forward," it is not some hollow romantic line, it is a commitment, a promise he carries through every single one of his actions. The way he looks at her through Tomforde's words, that restrained intensity, is the kind of thing that makes you put the book down, take a breath, and remember why you read romance.
The dynamic between them is electric. They know each other so well that every conversation is loaded with subtext, unspoken memories, and barely contained desire. The shift from friendship to love, then the attempt to stay just friends when it is clearly impossible, all of it is written with a finesse that does the second-chance trope proud. And then there is Wren, who deserves a special mention. She brings a welcome freshness to every scene she appears in, and her relationship with Hallie is one of the most beautiful female friendships I have read recently in romance. She is never reduced to the role of the confidante who only exists to listen to the heroine's problems, she has her own personality, her own ambitions, and her presence genuinely enriches the story.
❤ What we loved
First, Liz Tomforde's writing. If you have already read her previous novels, you know she has this gift for making dialogue feel alive and emotions feel tangible. In Rewind It Back, she takes it even further. Every chapter alternates between moments of absolute lightness and passages of emotional intensity that grab you by the throat. There is this scene where Hallie moves into Wren's house, a moment that marks a turning point in her life, and Tomforde manages to inject excitement, nostalgia, and a hint of melancholy all at once. You physically feel the page turning in Hallie's life, and that is the mark of an author who has mastered her craft.
Then, the intimate conversation between Hallie and Rio about their past and their current feelings. It is probably the scene that hit me the hardest. They are there, face to face, and all the chemistry between them erupts to the surface despite their efforts to resist. When Hallie tells him "I'm flattered, but I've been out of the dating game for quite a while and frankly, I'd rather catch up on sleep," you can feel all the ambivalence, that blend of defensiveness and desire tearing her apart. It is raw, it is honest, and it is exactly what makes their relationship so believable. Tomforde does not take emotional shortcuts, she lets her characters be contradictory, fragile, and imperfect, and that is why it works so well.
Finally, the found family concept that runs through the entire novel. Wren is not just a roommate, she becomes a pillar for Hallie, someone who sees her for who she is and accepts her unconditionally. The bonds that form between the secondary characters bring a warmth to the story that goes far beyond a simple romance. You close the book feeling like you spent time with a group of friends, not just a couple. It is this generosity in writing human relationships that sets Tomforde apart from so many authors in the genre.
🔥 The spice level
Let us talk about what you really want to know, shall we? Rewind It Back sits at a solid 3 out of 5 on the spice scale, and that is exactly the right dosage for this story. The intimate scenes arrive at the perfect moment, when the tension between Hallie and Rio has been pushed to its absolute limit and you simply cannot wait any longer. Tomforde does not rush it, she takes her time building the desire, and when it finally happens, it is all the more satisfying for it.
The vibe is sensual rather than explicit, with particular attention paid to emotions as much as physical sensations. We are in the territory of rediscovered passion, of two bodies that already know each other and are finding each other again with a new kind of fever. It is hot, it is tender, and there is that underlying tension of the forbidden that spices up every interaction. If you are looking for pure, no-holds-barred smut, this is not where you will find it, but if you like your spice in service of the story and the feelings, you are going to be very satisfied. What Tomforde does particularly well is use physical intimacy as an extension of emotional intimacy. Every time Hallie and Rio get closer, it tells you something about their relationship, about what they cannot say with words. It is smart spice, spice that means something, and honestly that is rare and precious.
⚠ The small downside
If I have to be completely honest, and that is the deal between us, my only regret is about the secondary characters, and more specifically Tyler Braden. He is introduced as a potential source of tension, a romantic rival who could disrupt the fragile balance between Hallie and Rio, but in the end, his storyline remains underexplored. I would have liked Tomforde to give him more depth, more scenes, more development. As it stands, he serves more as background scenery than a real dramatic stake, and that is a bit of a shame when you know how brilliantly the author builds complex characters. It does not take anything away from the reading experience, but it leaves you with a slight taste of wanting more.
⭐ Final verdict
Rewind It Back is exactly the kind of book you want loaded on your e-reader when you need to feel good. It is a second-chance romance carried by lovable characters, lively and generous writing, and a perfect balance of emotion, humor, and sensuality. I recommend it to anyone who loved Liz Tomforde's previous novels, obviously, but also to any reader looking for a sports romance with heart and substance. Read it on a rainy weekend with a steaming cup of tea, or on a summer evening on your patio, feet in the grass and heart wide open. It is the kind of read that leaves you with a slightly goofy smile and the immediate urge to reread it from the very beginning. The important thing is to let yourself be carried away. Final rating: 4 out of 5, no hesitation.
💡 If you liked this, you'll love
If Rewind It Back made your heart race, I suggest diving into Mile High by the same Liz Tomforde, which explores similar territory with a romance between a flight attendant and a hockey player in an equally addictive register. In a similar vein, The Deal by Elle Kennedy is an absolute must-read in the college sports romance space, with sharp humor and explosive chemistry between the two leads. And if you want to stay in the world of second-chance romance with a touch of found family, Again, but Better by Christine Riccio might just become your next obsession, with its heroine who decides to start over and finally live the life she deserves.

Me equivoqué.
En Rewind It Back, va aún más lejos.
Cuando Hallie le dice "I'm flattered, but I've been out of the dating game for quite a while and frankly, I'd rather catch up on sleep", se siente toda la ambivalencia, esa mezcla de defensa y deseo que la tira.
⭐ Veredicto final
Weißt du, was mich an Second-Chance-Romanzen wahnsinnig macht?
❤ Was uns begeistert hat
Zuerst einmal Liz Tomfordes Schreibstil.
Als Hallie ihm sagt "I'm flattered, but I've been out of the dating game for quite a while and frankly, I'd rather catch up on sleep", spürt man die gesamte Ambivalenz, diese Mischung aus Verteidigung und Verlangen, die sie hin- und herzieht.
⭐ Fazit
👥 I personaggi
In Rewind It Back va ancora oltre.
⭐ Verdetto finale
