💡 Si tu as aimé, tu vas adorer
Our full review
You know what's worse than falling in love with the wrong person? Falling in love with someone you can never truly know. When I opened Un automne pour te pardonner by Morgane Moncomble, I was expecting a pretty autumnal romance, soft and comforting like a hot chocolate. What I found between those pages was a story that turned me inside out, tightened my throat and kept me awake on a Tuesday night until three in the morning. This first book in the Les 4 saisons series blends romance, secrets and mystery with a skill that grabs you in the gut from the very first pages. The kind of book where you tell yourself you'll just read one chapter before bed, and you end up halfway through without noticing the hours slip by. Get comfortable and let me tell you why this novel left such a mark on me and why it absolutely deserves a spot on your nightstand this autumn.
📖 What it's about
Imagine a Scottish boarding school in autumn. Edinburgh, its cobblestone lanes, its hills lost in mist and that golden light that makes everything feel like a melancholy end of the world. That's the breathtaking setting where Skye arrives. She's always been the black sheep of her family, the one who stands out, the one people glance at sideways without ever trying to understand what's hiding behind her silences and her rebellious air. She didn't choose to come here, and everything in her attitude screams it. And then there's Rory. Brilliant, sociable, the kind of boy everyone adores without really knowing him. The kind who smiles all the time, even when he shouldn't, even when smiling is the last thing he feels like doing.
From their very first encounter in the school hallway, something happens between them. Not a thunderbolt with violins and cinematic slow motion, no. More of a raw, almost unsettling connection, the kind that makes you understand these two are bound by something far deeper than simple physical attraction. The kind of connection that frightens you as much as it fascinates you. Except Rory carries a secret. A dark secret, the kind that can blow everything apart before their story has even truly begun, and whose shadow hangs over every page of the story.
But this novel isn't limited to a single love story. In parallel, Lou, Rory's brother, embarks on an obsessive quest to understand what happened to someone he loved more than anything in the world. Accompanied by Camelia, an old friend whose return into his life is anything but coincidental, he patiently follows a trail made of silences, lies and truths that no one around them wanted to face.
It's this double dimension that gives the book all its power. On one side, the romance between Skye and Rory, vibrant and fragile like the autumn leaves falling around them. On the other, Lou's investigation, tense and dark like October nights in Edinburgh. The two storylines intertwine with a precision that keeps you gripped from the first to the last chapter. You're not just reading a love story. You're reading an emotional puzzle where every piece matters, and when the two narrative threads finally cross, trust me, you are absolutely not ready for what's coming.
👥 The characters
Skye is the kind of heroine you want to wrap your arms around and shake at the same time. She's strong, independent, but deeply wounded by the gaze of a family that never knew what to do with her. She doesn't seek anyone's approval, and yet, behind that carefully crafted facade of indifference, there's a vulnerability that shines through on every page. She's an imperfect heroine, and that's exactly why you get attached to her so quickly. She doesn't play a role, she doesn't pretend to be someone else. She survives with the tools she has, and sometimes those tools are sharp, as much for others as for herself.
Rory surprises you at every chapter. At first glance, he has everything of the perfect boy. Intelligent, charming, surrounded by friends, the kind of guy who lights up a room just by walking into it. But beneath that smooth surface hides a complexity that Morgane Moncomble distills with formidable patience as the pages turn. You sense very quickly that something isn't quite right with him, that his smile is a carefully maintained mask, that his silences say far more than all his words. He's the kind of character who reminds you that the most radiant people sometimes carry the heaviest shadows, and this contradiction makes him absolutely magnetic.
The dynamic between Skye and Rory is the beating heart of this novel. They're different in every way and yet they understand each other in a way that no one else around them grasps. Their relationship is a blend of magnetic attraction and visceral fear, because opening up to someone means risking being seen for who you truly are. And for two people who have spent their entire lives hiding behind armor, that's the most terrifying thing in the world. Every exchange between them is loaded with a tension that makes reading almost physical. You hold your breath, you hope, you tremble a little.
Lou and Camelia also deserve a mention. They carry the darker side of the story with remarkable authenticity. Lou is consumed by grief and anger, driven by a need for truth that prevents him from living his own life. Camelia is that calm, determined presence that anchors him when everything around him threatens to collapse. Their relationship evolves slowly, under the surface, and brings a moving counterpoint to the more burning passion of Skye and Rory.
❤ What we loved
Morgane Moncomble's writing, first and foremost. This author has a rare talent for writing emotions without ever falling into pathos or sentimentality. Every sentence is carefully crafted, every word is exactly where it belongs. She creates an autumnal atmosphere that wraps the entire story like a thick blanket, with that gentle melancholy that makes you want to curl up in an armchair with a piping hot tea and not move until the last page. Her writing is both poetic and direct, the kind of prose that touches you right in the heart without you quite understanding how she did it. It's the kind of writing that makes you highlight entire passages because every turn of phrase resonates within you.
Then there's the narrative construction. The back-and-forth between Skye and Rory's romance and Lou's quest is handled with watchmaker precision. Every chapter ratchets the tension up a notch, every revelation opens new questions that push you to keep reading. When Skye confides "Parfois, je ne comprends pas comment Rory et moi avons réussi à devenir si proches en étant si différents" ("Sometimes, I don't understand how Rory and I managed to become so close when we're so different"), you feel the full ambivalence of their bond, that disbelief in the face of a connection that defies all logic and all caution. The author never gives you all the cards at once, and this carefully calibrated restraint makes every turned page more satisfying than the last.
And then there are those scenes that stay with you long after closing the book. The first meeting between Skye and Rory in the school hallway, charged with an electric tension you feel in your own hands. The discovery of the coded message left by Rory on Calton Hill, which upends everything you thought you'd understood and opens abysses of questions. The tense interaction between Rory and Lou at that birthday party where the unspoken threatens to explode at any moment and the air becomes unbreathable. Morgane Moncomble excels at building those key moments that stop you in your tracks and take your breath away. When a character whispers "Je n'ai pas envie d'être ici. Pourtant, je fais semblant" ("I don't want to be here. Yet I'm pretending"), that line pierces you through and through. You feel it in your own chest, that dull ache of someone keeping up appearances while everything crumbles inside. That's the whole power of this novel: it doesn't tell you about its characters' emotions, it makes you live them as if they were your own.
🔥 The spice level
Let's talk about what you're really here for, and let's be honest. With a spice level of 2 out of 5, we're clearly in lukewarm territory. If you're looking for steamy scenes in every chapter and descriptions that raise the temperature in the room, you won't find them here. But don't let that fool you, because what Morgane Moncomble does with this contained heat is devilishly effective.
The tension between Skye and Rory is ever-present throughout the story. It's in the glances that last just a little too long, in the brushes that are anything but accidental, in those loaded silences where the air between them becomes so thick you can barely breathe while reading. The author plays on frustration and anticipation with a mastery that has you turning pages frantically, hoping the long-awaited moment will finally arrive.
When the intimate scenes do arrive, they're written with sensitivity and authenticity. Nothing gratuitous, nothing mechanical. Every physical closeness between them is loaded with emotion and pushes their relationship forward a notch. It's the kind of spice that bets everything on tension and feelings rather than the explicit, and in the context of this story, it works perfectly.
⚠ The small downside
If I have to find one criticism of this book, and trust me I looked, it's precisely the balance between the romance and the darkness promised by the genre label. The announced genre is Dark Romance, and even though the themes covered are indeed dark and heavy, the treatment remains fairly tame overall. I would have liked the author to push a little further, to dare more in both the intimate scenes and the exploration of her characters' most troubled depths.
It's not a major flaw, mind you. The novel remains excellent for what it is. But if you come in expecting intense, unfiltered dark romance, you might find the whole thing slightly below what you were hoping for. It's more of a romance with dark undertones than a true dark romance in the traditional sense of the genre. A nuance worth mentioning so you know exactly what you're getting into.
⭐ Final verdict
Un automne pour te pardonner is an addictive, moving and brilliantly crafted first book that left me with a shattered heart and an irresistible urge to dive straight into the sequel. If you like romances where characters are as damaged as they are endearing, where secrets ratchet up the pressure chapter after chapter and where autumn becomes a full character in its own right with its colors, its smells and its melancholy, go for it with your eyes closed.
It's the perfect book for a rainy October evening under a blanket, with a steaming cup of tea and your phone on airplane mode. I recommend it to anyone who loves tense romances, gripping mysteries and characters you don't forget easily. And if you get hooked on the first book, know that the rest of the Les 4 saisons series is waiting for you with a new season, new hearts to break and to rebuild. My rating: 4 out of 5, a favorite despite the spice caveat.
💡 If you liked this, you'll love
If Un automne pour te pardonner won you over, I highly recommend diving into The Hating Game by Sally Thorne. You'll find that same unbearable tension between two characters who are complete opposites, with a delicious push-and-pull dynamic and a spice level that kicks up a solid notch. It's the kind of book that makes you smile stupidly on the subway while reading.
In a more emotional and heartbreaking register, It Ends with Us by Colleen Hoover will turn your heart inside out in exactly the same way, with characters of rare complexity and impossible choices that will haunt you long after the last page. Colleen Hoover shares with Morgane Moncomble that gift for creating heroines you admire as much as you want to protect them from the whole world.
And if you want to stay in French romance, keep an eye on the upcoming books in the Les 4 saisons series. If autumn is already this gripping and this intense, winter, spring and summer promise equally overwhelming emotions, each with the unique charm and colors of its own season.

Rory hingegen überrascht dich in jedem Kapitel.
❤ Was uns begeistert hat
👥 I personaggi
