💡 Si tu as aimé, tu vas adorer
Our full review
Have you ever wondered what would happen if you woke up married to a complete stranger after a night in Vegas, and that stranger turned out to be a baseball player with the worst attitude imaginable? Because that is exactly what happens in Play Along by Liz Tomforde, and trust me, it goes way beyond a simple accidental marriage. This book had me hooked from the very first pages with its electric tension, its razor-sharp dialogue, and the way the characters circle each other like two wild animals refusing to admit they were made for one another. If you are looking for a sports romance that blends on-field adrenaline with under-the-sheets heat, get comfortable because we are about to talk about this little gem that set TikTok on fire, and for very good reasons.
📖 What it's about
Play Along throws us into the cutthroat world of American professional baseball, a world where careers hang on a single pitch and appearances matter almost as much as talent. Isaiah Rhodes is a baseball player at the peak of his game, but his personal life is a minefield. On the other side, Kennedy Kay is a doctor, brilliant, determined, and she just had the position she crossed the country for stolen from under her. The reason? Dr. Fredrick, her would-be employer, simply does not hire women. Yes, we are smack in the middle of that kind of casual sexism that makes you want to hurl the book at the wall, except Liz Tomforde knows exactly what she is doing with that anger.
Fate, or rather a booze-fueled night in Las Vegas, is about to bring these two bruised souls together. When Isaiah and Kennedy find themselves married without really meaning to, they quickly realize that this accidental union might just be the solution to both their problems. He needs to clean up his public image, she needs leverage to exist in a world that refuses to open its doors to her. So they make a pact: play the part of the perfect couple, just long enough for each of them to get what they want.
Except that living together, sharing the same space, putting up with each other's quirks, and pretending in front of the whole world that you are head over heels in love, that starts to blur the lines. The tension between them is palpable from the start, a mix of distrust, irritation, and an attraction they are both desperately trying to ignore. Every interaction brings them a little closer, every argument peels back another layer of vulnerability, and very quickly you understand that what was supposed to be an arrangement is going to become a whole lot more complicated than planned.
The Windy City backdrop, with its roaring stadiums and high-society events, provides a vibrant setting for this story. You can tell Tomforde knows this world inside out, the pre-game rituals, the media pressure, the charity dinners where every smile is calculated. It is in those gaps between public life and private life that the relationship between Isaiah and Kennedy takes on its full flavor. Liz Tomforde perfectly balances the sports scenes, the intimate moments, and the career stakes that spice up the plot from beginning to end.
👥 The characters
Isaiah Rhodes is the kind of hero who makes you roll your eyes at first before completely melting you. On the surface, he is the arrogant baseball player, the one who knows he is handsome and talented and has no problem showing it. But beneath that facade, there is a man carrying deep wounds who uses his career as a shield against the rest of the world. The way he pushes Kennedy away at first, then slowly lets his guard down, is written with a precision that makes you want to wrap your arms around him as much as shake him. When he says "J'ai besoin de toi" (I need you), those are not words thrown around lightly, and you feel it in every syllable.
Kennedy Kay is a character who perfectly embodies the woman who refuses to be defined by the limits others try to impose on her. A competent doctor, she shows up in a world where she is told point-blank that she is not welcome. When she is confronted with that brutal reality, "Il y a une raison pour laquelle je ne recrute pas de femmes pour travailler avec moi" (There is a reason I do not hire women to work with me), she does not bend. Her composure in the face of the ambient sexism is refreshing and never overplayed. She does not cast herself as a victim, she fights with intelligence and determination. What makes her so endearing is also her ability to show her vulnerability when she is alone with Isaiah, to admit that beneath the armor of the strong woman, there is someone who doubts and who is afraid of failure. Her relationship with Isaiah works because she refuses to be intimidated by his moods and because she sees beyond the public image.
The dynamic between them is an enemies-to-lovers for the ages. Their verbal sparring is sharp as a blade, charged with an electricity that has you turning pages at breakneck speed. What makes their story so gripping is that neither of them wants to be the first to give in, and when one of them finally cracks, the impact is all the more powerful. Their evolution from distrust to complicity, then from complicity to something much deeper, is built with a patience and subtlety that do justice to Tomforde's pen.
❤ What we loved
First, the tension. Liz Tomforde has a gift for building tension that rises in a crescendo and never drops. Every scene shared between Isaiah and Kennedy is loaded with an almost unbearable electricity. You know something is eventually going to explode, but the author plays with your nerves and pushes back the moment with a sadistic mastery that gets you hooked. The scenes where they have to pretend to be a couple in front of cameras and teammates are particularly delicious, because you watch the masks slip and the real feelings surface despite themselves. And when Isaiah drops that line, "Eteins ton cerveau et fais ce qui te fait du bien. C'est juste un jeu, non ? Toi et moi, c'est juste un jeu, alors joue le jeu" (Turn off your brain and do what feels good. It is just a game, right? You and me, it is just a game, so play along), you understand the game is already lost for both of them.
Then, the underlying themes. This book does not settle for being an entertaining romance, it bravely tackles the question of women's place in professional sports. The scene celebrating Kai's career milestone highlights the challenges that Kennedy and Reese face as women navigating a male-dominated world. Those moments give the story depth and elevate it well beyond mere entertainment. You find yourself thinking at the same time as you are burning with impatience for the next scene between our two leads.
Finally, Liz Tomforde's writing. There is something addictive about the way she writes. The dialogue is sharp, natural, often funny, and the descriptions of intimate moments are written with a controlled sensuality that never falls into vulgarity. She knows how to balance humor and emotion, light moments and passages that tighten your chest. You can see why she became a TikTok sensation: her writing has that rare quality of making you feel like she is telling you the story in person, with that intensity in her eyes that says the best is yet to come.
🔥 The spice level
We are looking at a 3 out of 5, which means things get seriously heated without tipping into nonstop scorching. The intimate scenes arrive at just the right moment, when the tension that has built up between Isaiah and Kennedy has reached a point of no return. The first night they spend together is a turning point in the book, a moment where they explore their mutual attraction while trying to define the boundaries of their arrangement. It is sensual, it is intense, and above all it is charged with an emotion that goes beyond the purely physical.
Liz Tomforde writes desire with a refreshing honesty. There is fever, trembling hands, breath catching, but also that vulnerability that makes each intimate scene more impactful than a simple hot sequence. You feel that every physical closeness moves their emotional relationship forward, and that is what makes the difference between a forgettable spicy scene and one that stays with you. This is not gratuitous steaminess, it is the build-up of a real connection that ends up expressing itself in the most natural way possible.
⚠ The small downside
If you are here purely for the romance and could not care less about sports, there are passages where baseball takes up maybe a little too much space. The game scenes, the career stakes, the rivalries between players are all very well written, but they occupy a significant portion of the story. For sports romance fans, it is a feast. For those who only want butterflies in the stomach and killer glances, you will sometimes have to be patient between locker room scenes and sports strategy. It does not take anything away from the quality of the book, but it is worth knowing before diving in. The balance sometimes tips a little too far toward the field and not enough toward the bedroom.
The Final Verdict
Play Along is an excellent pick if you love sports romances with personality, characters who keep it real, and sexual tension that could power a small city. The Isaiah-Kennedy duo works wonderfully thanks to their explosive chemistry and writing that never lets up. It is the kind of book you devour in a single weekend, sprawled on your couch with a cup of tea going cold beside you because you forgot to drink it. I recommend it to anyone who loved the Windy City Series and wants to find that perfect recipe of feelings, sports, and sensuality again. If you have a long train ride or a rainy Sunday ahead of you, this is the perfect companion. Final score: 4 out of 5, a solid favorite that absolutely deserves a spot on your to-be-read pile.
💡 If you liked this, you'll love
If Play Along made your heart race, go straight for The Deal by Elle Kennedy, a cult sports romance that also plays the fake couple card with delicious tension between a stubborn college student and a hockey player with devastating charm. In a slightly different but equally addictive register, Fake It Till You Break It by Sophie Jordan explores lies that become truth with irresistible freshness. And if it was the arranged marriage angle that got you, The Unhoneymooners by Christina Lauren will have you dying of laughter with its duo of fake newlyweds stuck on a honeymoon that is about to go off the rails in the best possible way. Three books that share the DNA of Play Along and guarantee you hours of pure reading joy.

❤ Was uns begeistert hat

👥 I personaggi
È solo un gioco, no?
