Quand il lui dit "I expressed myself poorly.
💡 Si tu as aimé, tu vas adorer
Our full review
Have you ever wondered what happens when a brilliant NASA scientist finds herself trapped underground in the middle of Norway with a man as mysterious as he is irresistible? Neither had I, until I stumbled upon Ali Hazelwood's Below Zero. And trust me, I was not at all expecting to devour this book in one night, heart racing, unable to put it down even for a second. This novel took me by surprise with its explosive mix of scorching tension, intelligence, and scenes that raise the temperature dramatically. If you're looking for a read that blends incandescent romance and fascinating scientific universe, get comfortable with a good cup of tea because we have a lot to talk about this little gem that left me breathless.
📖 What it's about
Hannah Arroyo is no ordinary person. She's a NASA scientist with a PhD in aerospace engineering, specializing in planetary geology. Let me tell you, this woman has her head screwed on tight and her feet firmly on the ground, even when she spends her days dreaming of oceans on Mars. When we first meet her at the beginning of the book, she's on a mission in Norway, far from everything she knows, in an environment as icy as the relationships she maintains with her past. We immediately sense that she's carrying something heavy, something she prefers to bury under layers of professionalism and emotional distance.
It's in this polar setting, both hostile and magnificent at once, that everything changes. Hannah finds herself trapped underground, in circumstances I won't reveal to avoid spoiling the surprise. Let's just say that the situation goes from strictly professional to terribly personal in the blink of an eye when Ian Floyd bursts into her life. Or rather, when he reappears, because these two have a history. A history we discover in fragments, like pieces of ice slowly melting to reveal what's hiding underneath, something both burning and painful at once.
Ali Hazelwood builds her plot with formidable skill. On one side, there's the raw survival, the biting cold, the oppressive isolation, the physical challenges that put bodies and minds to the test. On the other, there's this tension between Hannah and Ian, the constant unspoken words that electrify every shared scene. The scientific context brings an unusually rich dimension to this romance, and it's terribly refreshing to see a heroine who doesn't need to be saved but still has to face situations that completely overwhelm her. All of this is wrapped in fluid writing that transports you from the corridors of NASA to the icy depths of Norway without you noticing the hours passing.
The main stake isn't so much in physical danger as it is in emotional confrontation. Hannah and Ian are forced to cohabit, to talk to each other, to face each other when all they want to do is run from what the other represents. It's this prison, both geographical and emotional, that gives the narrative all its power and makes every page as addictive as the last.
👥 The characters
Hannah is the kind of character you immediately adore. She's brilliant, determined, a bit clumsy in her social interactions but terribly endearing in her way of navigating a world that doesn't make things easy for her. The fact that she evolves in a scientific environment dominated by men gives depth to her journey. We feel her doubts, her frustration with everyday sexism, but also her legitimate pride when she asserts, as she does so well in the book: "I'm a NASA scientist. I have a PhD in aerospace engineering and several publications in the field of planetary geology." This line sets the tone for the entire character. Hannah knows who she is, even when the rest of the world tries to reduce her to less than what she's worth. And this professional assurance contrasts beautifully with her sentimental vulnerability.
Ian Floyd is the archetype of the mysterious hero, but Ali Hazelwood infuses him with enough nuances to avoid being a mere cliché. We sense that he carries the weight of a complicated past, that his silences say more than his words, and that his feelings for Hannah are anything but simple. Their dynamic is explosive because it's based on a mix of unspoken words, visceral physical attraction, and mutual wounds that have never fully healed. When he says to her "I expressed myself poorly. I was inviting you up because I would love to have dinner with you", we understand that behind his measured and almost clumsy words hides a man who struggles to express what he truly feels, a man who chooses each of his words as if they could explode at the slightest misstep.
It's this tension between what they say and what they really think that makes every exchange between them absolutely magnetic. We want to shake them, scream at them to be honest with each other, and at the same time we savor every second of this emotional ballet where no one dares to take the first step. Their chemistry is palpable from their first shared scene and only intensifies as the pages turn.
❤ What we loved
First, Ali Hazelwood's writing. This author has the gift of mixing humor and emotion with disconcerting ease. We go from laughter to tears in a few pages, and every dialogue sounds just right, every line falls at exactly the right moment. The interaction between Hannah, Sadie, and Mara during their surprise visit is a pure moment of literary happiness. We find that typical Hazelwood lightness again, this unique ability to create credible and deeply touching female friendships that serve as the perfect counterpoint to the main romantic tension. These friendship scenes bring welcome warm flushes in a narrative that could quickly become oppressive given the context of survival and isolation. We laugh with these three women, we envy their complicity, and we recognize ourselves in their jokes and their way of supporting each other without filter.
Then, the tension. Oh my god, the tension. Hazelwood masters the slow burn like no one else in the contemporary romance landscape. Every glance exchanged between Hannah and Ian is loaded with everything they dare not say to each other. Every accidental brushing causes sparks that we feel right down to our own guts. The hostile setting of Norway amplifies everything, because when you're trapped in a confined space with someone who turns your brain and heart upside down simultaneously, every second becomes both a torment and a delight. The confinement forces the characters to confront each other, and by extension, to confront themselves and everything they've been running from for so long. It's brilliantly orchestrated from start to finish.
Finally, the representation of women in science. Hazelwood, herself a researcher in the academic world, knows what she's talking about and it's felt on every page. Hannah's daily life at NASA, the micro-aggressions she endures, the moments of deep doubt but also the hard-won victories, all sound with a rare authenticity. Hannah's rescue by Ian after her fall in the Arctic is a scene that shows well that Hazelwood isn't just about romance. She builds a credible and rich professional universe, populated with secondary characters who have their own depth and their own struggles. This attention to detail and this desire to do justice to the scientific world transform Below Zero from a simple romance into a true portrait of women fighting for their place in a world that hasn't always been open to them.
🔥 The spice level
Let's talk about serious things. On our Ember Read scale, Below Zero positions itself at 3 out of 5, which corresponds to a hot level. And it's perfectly calibrated for the type of story Hazelwood tells here. The intimate scenes arrive exactly at the right moment, when the tension between Hannah and Ian has reached a point of no return and any further resistance would have become absurd. Hazelwood never falls into gratuitous vulgarity. She favors sensations, emotions on the skin's surface, looks that say more than any explicit gesture. The rapprochement scenes are sensual and charged with pure emotion, carried by all the weight of their past history and attraction repressed for too long.
If you're looking for ultra-explicit spice with crude descriptions in every chapter, this isn't necessarily where you'll find it. But if you want scenes that make you feel the thrill, the breathlessness, the exact moment when everything shifts between two people who have wanted each other for so long without ever daring to touch, then Below Zero will satisfy you beyond your expectations. It's the kind of romance where tension itself is the most powerful aphrodisiac, and where intimate scenes become the explosive release of everything that has been contained for pages and pages. And honestly, it's often much more effective and much more memorable than raw, uncut spice.
⚠ The small downside
If I have to find fault with this book, and believe me, it costs me, it's the development of secondary characters. Sadie and Mara are adorable and bring moments of welcome lightness, but we're left a bit wanting regarding them. I would have liked to see more of them, understand their own stakes and stories better, feel that they exist fully outside of their role as moral support for Hannah. It's a shame because through just a few scenes, Hazelwood shows that she knows how to create endearing secondary characters, and a few more pages dedicated to these women would have greatly enriched the entire narrative. It's a minor flaw in an otherwise excellent book, but it's the kind of detail that prevents Below Zero from reaching absolute perfection and makes me keep one star in reserve.
⭐ Final verdict
Below Zero is an indisputable heartthrob. If you love intelligent romances carried by heroines who have plenty to say for themselves, a dark love interest who hides his game well behind his silences, and sexual tension that builds up crescendo until the liberating explosion, go without hesitation. This book is perfect for a rainy weekend under the covers, a long winter evening with a hot chocolate in hand, or simply a moment when you want to lose yourself in a story that will make your heart beat a little faster than usual. Ali Hazelwood once again confirms that she is the undisputed queen of STEM romance, and Below Zero is perhaps her most accomplished narrative in terms of narrative tension and raw emotion. Final score: 4 out of 5, and a reading memory that doesn't fade easily.
💡 If you liked this, you'll love
If Below Zero made you vibrate, I highly recommend The Martian by Andy Weir for the scientific and survivalist side, even if beware, no romance here, just biting humor and total immersion in science. To find this heady mix of passion and total disorientation again, dive into Outlander by Diana Gabaldon, which shares with Below Zero this ability to create an impossible love under absolutely extraordinary circumstances, with a setting that becomes a character in its own right. And of course, if you haven't read Ali Hazelwood's other books yet, immediately rush on The Love Hypothesis and Love on the Brain. You'll find her unique and recognizable style: brilliant scientists who aren't apologetic for being so, delicious tensions that keep you awake far too late, and dialogues that bring a smile even on the grayest days. You won't be disappointed, I promise.
Y por supuesto, si aún no has leído los otros libros de Ali Hazelwood, ve inmediatamente a The Love Hypothesis y Love on the Brain.
❤ Was uns begeistert hat
Hazelwood verfällt nie in billige Vulgarität.
👥 I personaggi
