💡 Si tu as aimé, tu vas adorer

Our full review
Have you ever been so deep in a book that you forgot to eat, forgot to sleep, and ended up reading in the dark with your phone brightness cranked all the way down just to avoid waking anyone up? Because that is exactly what happened to me with The War of Two Queens, the fourth book in the From Blood and Ash series by Jennifer L. Armentrout. This book literally sucked me in from the very first word to the very last. Between the plot twists that knock the breath right out of you, the intimate scenes that raise the temperature in the room, and that relentless tension that never lets you go, I devoured this volume in a single night. One single night. And trust me, I still have the dark circles to prove it. So settle in with your favorite tea, because I am about to tell you exactly why this book absolutely deserves your next sleepless night.
📖 What it's about
We pick up right where book three left us, hearts in pieces and nerves completely shot. Poppy finds herself captive, chained up by the cruel queen Isbeth, separated from Casteel and plunged into a waking nightmare she cannot see any way out of. The setting is dark, oppressive, almost suffocating, and from the very first pages you feel that the atmosphere has shifted radically compared to the earlier books. We are no longer in the discovery phase, no longer in awe of a brand-new world. Here, we step into war. Real war. The kind that hurts, that transforms people at their core and leaves no one unscathed.
Poppy must face terrifying truths about her past, about what she truly is, and about the vertiginous extent of what she is capable of. And when I say terrifying, I mean every single word. Revelations follow one another at a breathless pace and each one upends everything you thought you knew about this so meticulously crafted world since the first book. You thought you had figured out what was at stake? Think again completely. Armentrout loves flipping the cards at the exact moment you least expect it, and she does it here with a mastery that commands real respect.
Meanwhile, Casteel is doing everything in his power to find Poppy. We follow him on his desperate quest, accompanied by his faithful Kieran and Delano, as they cross hostile territories toward Padonia to join their armies and prepare their response. The tension is palpable on every page, every chapter, every single line of dialogue. You turn pages frantically wondering if their reunion will ever come, and above all what state each of them will be in when that long-awaited moment finally arrives.
What makes this volume particularly intense is the skillful blend of politics, ancient magic, and burning feelings. Alliances form and dissolve according to everyone's shifting interests, betrayals are common currency, and in the middle of all that chaos there is a love story that stubbornly refuses to die despite everything it is put through. It is dark, it is violent at times, but it is also incredibly beautiful in the way it shows that some bonds are simply unbreakable, even when the entire universe conspires to destroy them.
👥 The characters
Poppy. If you have been following her since the very first book, get ready to barely recognize her. Well, she is still herself, with that fierce determination and that inner flame that have defined her from the start, but she has evolved in a way that genuinely gives you chills. The naive, sheltered young woman of the saga's early chapters is gone. What stands before you in this fourth book is a warrior, a survivor, a woman discovering that she is infinitely more than what she has been led to believe for all these years. This fierce will to be done with lies and captivity consumes and transforms her right before your eyes. And when she learns that she is the Primal of Blood and Bone, the true Primal of Life and Death, absolutely everything shifts. The way she handles this monumental revelation, moving between muted terror and gradual acceptance, is masterfully written and grabs you by the gut in a way that very few fictional characters ever manage.
Casteel is at the peak of what a love interest can offer in a dark romance saga. This rebel prince is ready to start an entire war, to burn the world if need be, to find the woman he loves. He is intense, protective without ever becoming suffocating, and his unwavering loyalty to Poppy is the kind of devotion that makes you dream at night and sigh during the day. But Armentrout does not fall into the easy trap of the perfect, flawless hero. Casteel has his dark sides, his moments of devastating doubt, his old wounds that surface at the worst possible moments, and that is precisely what makes him so deeply likable and human. As human as an Atlantian prince can possibly be.
And then there is Isbeth. This antagonist is absolutely chilling. She does not settle for being evil out of pure sadistic pleasure, no, that would be too simple and too predictable. She has her reasons, her twisted but terrifyingly coherent logic, her old wounds that explain without ever excusing her actions, and that makes her all the more terrifying. Every scene with her makes you deeply uncomfortable because you never know how far she is willing to go to get what she wants. Her confrontation with the heroes is one of the most gripping through-lines of this entire volume, and every face-off leaves you with a lump in your throat and your hands clenched around your e-reader.
❤ What we loved
Jennifer L. Armentrout's writing is a delicious trap. It catches you from the very first sentence and does not release you until the very last page, and even then you stay hooked, staring into the distance, digesting everything you have just been through. Her writing has that rare quality of knowing how to perfectly balance action, raw emotion, and romantic tension without any one of them ever overpowering the others. In this volume in particular, she reaches a level of mastery that is simply impressive. Chapters flow with a fluidity that is almost dangerously addictive, and you find yourself saying "come on, just one more chapter, just one" when it is three in the morning and your alarm is set for four hours from now.
There are many standout scenes in this volume, but some stay etched in your memory long after you have closed the book. The revelation that Poppy is the Primal of Blood and Bone is a moment of pure narrative intensity. You may have seen it coming, the clues were there, scattered with remarkable subtlety throughout the chapters, but the way this truth is delivered, with all the emotional weight it carries, literally takes your breath away. And this line that echoes long after you have read the last sentence: "Tu n'es pas juste une faille dans le contrat. ("You are not just a flaw in the contract. You are many things. The Primal of Blood and Bone, the true Primal of Life and Death.") If that does not send chills all the way up the back of your neck, honestly, I do not know what could.
The journey to Padonia is another major highlight of this volume. It is in these moments on the road, of shared danger and nights spent watching for the enemy, between Poppy, Casteel, Kieran, and Delano, that the bonds between characters reveal themselves in all their depth and complexity. The dialogue is crafted with remarkable precision, funny sometimes at the exact moment you least expect it, heartbreaking often when the reality of their situation catches up with them brutally. Armentrout excels in these suspended moments where intimacy slips in between two battles, where a glance exchanged in the half-dark is worth more than a thousand passionate declarations.
And then there is the book's overall atmosphere, which deserves to be acknowledged at its full worth. You can feel that the author has raised the bar considerably compared to previous volumes. The world deepens and gains striking nuances, the stakes escalate in a vertiginous way, and that oppressive feeling that everything could tip at any moment never leaves you. "La douleur était le prix à payer." ("Pain was the price to pay.") This sentence, dropped without ceremony on a random page, perfectly captures the spirit of this fourth volume. Every hard-won victory comes at a steep cost, every stolen moment of happiness is heartbreakingly fragile, and it is precisely that fragility that makes the whole thing so poignant and so memorable.
🔥 The spice level
Let's talk about what we are all here for, and let's be honest and completely unapologetic about it. The spice level of this fourth volume sits at a solid 3 out of 5, which places it firmly in the hot category, very hot even, without quite burning you to the ground. The intimate scenes between Poppy and Casteel are loaded with pure emotion and tension, and they arrive at perfectly chosen moments in the plot, which makes them all the more intense and meaningful. We are not talking about gratuitous scenes thrown in to fill pages. Every moment of physical closeness between these two carries deep meaning, a clear reason for being in the way the story unfolds.
The chemistry between Poppy and Casteel is simply electric, almost incandescent at times. Even when they are separated by miles and stone walls, you feel that burning tension vibrating between the lines, keeping you on edge. And when they finally find each other again, let's just say the reunion is well worth the long and painful wait. Armentrout knows how to ramp up the heat with incredible skill, weaving between infinite tenderness and devouring urgency, between softness and that burning need that makes you turn the pages a little faster than usual. This is not the spiciest volume in the saga, that is true, but the context of war and constant danger makes every stolen moment between them all the more precious and charged with intensity.
⚠ The small downside
If I have to find one complaint about this book, and trust me you have to stay honest even when you have loved every single minute of the read, it is the treatment of the secondary characters. Kieran and Delano are there, present, faithful to the end, loyal down to their very claws, but I would have genuinely loved for Armentrout to take more time to dig deeper into their individual stories. They accompany Poppy and Casteel on this dangerous and uncertain quest, they risk their lives at every turn without ever hesitating for a second, and yet you sometimes get the frustrating impression that they have been reduced to the role of moving backdrop around the main characters. A few extra chapters focused on their deeper motivations, their most intimate fears, their own emotional stakes would have given even more depth and richness to this already excellent volume. It is a minor note in an ocean of qualities, but it deserves to be mentioned because these characters, too, deserve better.
⭐ Final verdict
This fourth volume is a major turning point in the From Blood and Ash saga, a point of no return that changes absolutely everything. It is dark, intense, breathless from beginning to end, and it leaves you with that delicious mix of total emotional exhaustion and a fierce urge to immediately throw yourself into the next book. I recommend it wholeheartedly to anyone who loves dark romance with substance, characters who genuinely evolve over the course of the pages, and storylines that never take you for an idiot. If you are looking for a book for a rainy weekend where you want to completely disappear from the real world for a few blessed hours, this one is absolutely made for you. Just make sure you have tissues in industrial quantities, tea or hot chocolate within reach, and above all, above all, make sure you have book five ready to open. "Pour l'amour du ciel" ("For the love of heaven"), you are going to desperately need it.
💡 If you liked this, you'll love
If The War of Two Queens had you glued to the pages and left you completely thirsting for more, there is a good chance you will fall hard for Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas. You will find that same explosive recipe of powerful, complex female characters plunged into tangled political intrigues, all generously sprinkled with spicy romance that only makes everything better. In the same bewitching spirit, A Court of Thorns and Roses, once again by the unmissable Sarah J. Maas, will transport you into a fascinating fae world where romantic tension reaches heights you never even thought possible and where each book pushes the limits a little further. And if you want to stay in that dark romance atmosphere of captivity, redemption, and forbidden feelings, I strongly encourage you to dive into the other books in the From Blood and Ash series if you have not already, because the universe Armentrout has created is a truly addictive labyrinth you will never want to find your way out of.

❤ Was uns begeistert hat
