DRM (Digital Rights Management) is a digital lock that some publishers add to their files. It prevents reading outside authorized apps (Kobo, Adobe Digital Editions...). Ember Read cannot open DRM-protected files — this is a technical limitation, not a choice.
How to check before buying
Check the product page
Before buying, look for "DRM-free" or "Sans DRM" in the product details. On Fnac, it's under "Protection". On Kobo, look for the "DRM Free" badge.
Buy from the publisher's website
When you buy directly from the publisher (Hugo, Black Ink, La Musardine...), the file is often DRM-free even if the same title is protected elsewhere.
Use Numilog or Vivlio
These bookstores clearly indicate DRM status for each title. Numilog even has a "Sans DRM" filter to show only compatible books.
